Form is Emptiness, Emptiness Form

My first museum show (group exhibit) opens in about a week at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington NC. The show is titled "Toying With Art" features the work of over 50 artists and will run through March 28, 2010.

I almost did not participate in the show as I had missed a few deadlines. On November third, the curator Ashley Standera, contacted me to ask if I planned to participate. In a sleepless overnight frenzy I finished my toy and sent it off the next day on my lunch break at work.

My piece is titled "Sunyata" which is a Sanskrit word commonly translated as emptiness and used in Buddhism to define the ever changing and transitory nature of reality. For some reason I was not able to get the accents to display on the web, but here is a wikipedia link to sunyata with the proper accents and definition. LinkHere. Stacking dolls lend themselves well to the idea of emptiness as well as suggesting the idea of interdependence. At the core of each doll is emptiness and at the same time another form. While Sunyata is worthy of serious thought, by illustrating it with amusing characters a sense of playfulness is highlighted.

Here is a picture of my piece installed in The Cameron Art Museum.

And here are a few from the reception,  which was quite well attended.
